Derek Nathanial Luke, born on April 24, 1974, in Jersey City, New Jersey, is an American actor known for his compelling performances in both film and television. He is the son of Marjorie Dixon, a pianist, and Maurice Luke, a former actor. His father is from Georgetown, Guyana. Luke attended Henry Snyder High School and graduated from Linden High School.
Luke's breakout role came in 2002 when he starred as the titular character in the film "Antwone Fisher," directed and produced by Denzel Washington. His performance earned him the Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead. He continued to build his career with notable roles in films such as "Friday Night Lights" (2004), "Glory Road" (2006), "Madea Goes to Jail" (2009), "Captain America: The First Avenger" (2011), and "Baggage Claim" (2013). Luke also played Kevin Porter in the Netflix original series "13 Reasons Why" (2017-2020).
In addition to his film work, Luke has appeared in various television series, including "The King of Queens," "Moesha," "Trauma," "Hawthorne," "The Americans," and "Empire".
