His parents met while performing in London’s West End, and he has a younger half-brother, James Ireland, from his mother’s remarriage to Michael J. Ireland.

Pettyfer was raised in Esher and later Windsor, Berkshire. He attended several independent schools, including The Mall School in Twickenham, Lambrook Haileybury in Berkshire, Millfield School in Somerset, and Shiplake College near Henley-on-Thames.
